Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science is concerned with the pursuit of scientific truth through research and teaching. It provides its students with the tools for rationale and objective analysis of facts and the methodology and the technical know-how by which such facts are established. At the end of their training, the graduates are expected to have gained specialised knowledge and expertise in a well-defined domain of modern science in the context of human and environmental development. Through its community and mode of operation, it strives to inculcate in the students the virtues of hard work, honesty, fairness, dignity, civic responsibility, consideration for neighbours and commonwealth.

The Faculty runs a total of thirty five (35) degree programmes comprising ten (10) BSc. degrees; thirteen (13) MSc. degrees [five (5) Professional and eight (8) Research degrees]; eleven (11) PhD degree programmes and seven (7) Professional Minors in the seven (7) Departments which presently have a permanent staff strength of a hundred and six (106) and thirty one (31) visiting or part-time Lecturers and Professors.

Research

The academic staff members of the Faculty carry out research in various fields, in collaboration with other national and international universities as well as research institutions. Priority research areas include:

  • Biotechnology and biodiversity for health and agriculture;
  • Biologically active compounds and drug development;
  • Materials, renewable energy, biodiversity and earth resources;
  • Monitoring pollution, risk assessment investigation;
  • Mathematics and its applications, information technology.

Currently, there are several internationally-funded research projects being carried out in the Faculty.

Linkages

The Faculty, through the auspices of the University, will maintain existing links with national and international institutions of higher education. Departments will be encouraged to seek new linkages as well as partnerships with local industries and the community.
